YoungLives Partners with Save a Life International in Ukraine

Ukraine’s population of unwed mothers is growing. With current economic hardships and many men leaving to find work in other countries, young, unwed mothers find it challenging to get the support they need to properly care for their children.

As her YoungLives clubs grew, Area Director Ira Utkin wanted to provide better resources and support. Ira’s pastor suggested she attend a conference that offered training for leaders who help teen moms. At this conference, Ira met Nadiya Gordinsky, the founder of Save a Life International. They quickly became friends and realized they could work together in supporting these young teens and their babies who were so in need of God’s Word, provision and dedicated assistance from caring leaders.
Nadiya dreamed of starting a Save a Life in Ukraine and as she learned more about the Young Life Chernivtsi Center, she realized an opportunity to better serve this population of teens. For many years the Young Life center has provided ongoing support to teen moms. In addition to spiritual
mentoring through Bible studies, weekly club, and camps, they offer babysitting and parenting classes. The Young Life center supports them in their efforts to continue their education and find jobs — even providing food and clothing for those in need. Nadiya recognized what a blessing these resources would be in caring for moms and babies as they transition out of the care of the Save A Life Foundation. Nadiya and Ira worked together, and their dream of opening Pregnancy Crisis Centers was realized.
God has been so present in the partnering of Ukraine YoungLives with Save a Life International. Pregnancy Crisis Centers have opened in cities where there is active YoungLives, supporting young women who are pregnant and in need of medical care and spiritual mentoring. Some of the girls are contemplating abortion and turn to the center for guidance. They receive counseling, professional health care and, if requested, adoption assistance. They are fully supported throughout their pregnancy and during the first critical months of the baby’s life. The support continues through YoungLives where they receive spiritual mentoring, baby care classes, babysitting and short retreats. Education and job counseling are available, as well as ongoing parenting classes, allowing these young women the opportunity to grow in Christ and provide for their children.

Pregnancy Crisis Centers are opened in Chernivtsi, Zaporizhia and Lutsk. They are working hard to open a center in Khmelnitsky before the end of the year, and with God’s help, a center will open in Odessa in early 2018. These cities have thriving Young Life ministry, and training is ongoing so that YoungLives leaders are able to work alongside the professionals running the Crisis centers.
